Bird Boxes project - Diary
pages - 1st March 2008
Today saw the first survey take place and it took us around three hours to walk around all the boxes.
It was not the best day to start the surveys on as the weather was cold with gales! and with this type of weather we thought that we would see nothing. It is quiet early for nesting to begin but at this time of year many birds are looking for that ideal nesting place.
During the survey we found 13 boxes in use. At one of the boxes a pair of Blue Tits were going in and out of the box and were being watched by a pair of Great Tits, in a nearby tree. It seems their is a "battle" going on over who owns this box, as the Great Tits then attacked the pair of Blue Tits every time they tried to enter the box again. Which species will win?
One of the old Dormouse boxes is still being used by a Blue Tit to roost in overnight. Normally this is a good sign for a nest to be built in the box.
The results from todays survey can now be viewed by clicking on the "Survey Results" link.
The next survey will be carried out on 8th March 2008.
If you think you can help with the surveys please contact us.
