Bird Boxes project - Diary
pages - 26th April 2008
What a difference a week makes. Today, for the first time this year, the weather was really warm and Spring like. I recorded temperatures of around 20/21C.
The warmer weather has made many birds now think about completing their nests and start to lay eggs.
The Robin in zone 1 is now incubating five or six eggs, and in around 15 days we should see the eggs hatch. Sadly two Blue Tit nests have been abandoned, but a new one is being bulit in a box nearby.
Reading on some other websites it appears this year may be another bad year for the Blue Tit & Great Tit. I have been reading that three people have seen their nest being abandoned, just before it is completed for no reason. Hopefully this is not going to become common.
We also have some sad news to report. The Robin's nest in Zone 2 looks to have failed or been abandoned. I have not seen any activity around the nest for over a week now. What has caused the nest to fail is unknown, but I will give it another week just in case.
The Nuthatch's are doing well and it appears the female is now possibly incubating a clutch of eggs. I observed the male feeding the female at the enterance hole over four times in just ten minuted. He never managed to enter the box, as the female warned him off.
Whilst watching the Nuthatch box I observed a female Song Thrush bringing in grass to a nearby bush. It appears the bird is building a nest, and hopefully I will be able to get some photos soon.
Egg laying is now starting, for many species of birds, and for the next few weeks activity at many of the boxes will be low.
The Dawn Chours walk is taking place on Sunday 4th May 2008, starting at 5am. If you would like to attend please contact us for more details or visit the Events section of this website.
