Bird Boxes project - Diary pages - 17th May 2008

I have only just realized that I have not made any diary entries for over three weeks. Sorry to all our visitors.

The dawn chorus walk was well attended and I hope everyone enjoyed the walk around the reserve. Sorry there were no bacon rolls :) I have added a list of what was heard. Please visit the "Birds" section to find out more.

Today another survey was carried out. Over the last few weeks we have seen more boxes being used. On my walkaround today I saw around 14 boxes being visited with food. Many of the boxes now have chicks beginning to hatch and the parents are feeding them often. This is now making it a lot easier to tell which boxes are in use.

The Robin in zone 1 now has chicks and I have seen both the male and female feeding them. Sadly we can now confirm the Robin nest in zone 2 has failed. The reason is unknown.

In one of my earlier diary entries I mentioned that two Blue Tit nests appeared to had been abandoned. Last week I saw some activity around one of them, and was hopeful that maybe they would nest in this box. One going around today I found the nest box had been pulled down. A fox had managed to get hold of the nest (located in a old Dormouse box) and all the eggs were lost. I plan to move these boxes up higher and secure them better next year.

The Nuthatch nest seems to have failed also. Both Jane and myself have not seen any activity around the box for a few weeks. Whilst going around today I saw a Great Tit going to the enterance. I can only think that possibly the Great Tit has forced the Nuthatch out of the box.

This year the surveys will be going on a little longer than in 2007. We plan to continue until 21st June. Also as Robins have two broads I will be checking the Robin boxes again from the beginning of July.

Ben
